EFCC arrests Tunde Ayeni over alleged multi-billion Naira fraud

Tunde Ayeni

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested former chairman of Skye Bank Plc, Tunde Ayeni, over allegations of a multi-billion-naira fraud involving loan diversion and money laundering.

The arrest, which took place in Abuja last week, marks a significant development in an ongoing investigation into financial transactions linked to companies associated with the businessman.

According to multiple reports, Ayeni was picked up by EFCC operatives in Abuja and is currently being held at a detention facility as investigators continue to interrogate him. The anti-graft agency has confirmed the arrest but has not publicly disclosed full details of the case, noting that investigations are ongoing.

Sources familiar with the matter say the arrest is linked to allegations of financial impropriety involving loans obtained from Polaris Bank through companies connected to Ayeni. The funds, reportedly secured for specific projects, are alleged to have been diverted for other uses, prompting scrutiny from investigators.

Alleged scale of the fraud

At the centre of the investigation is an alleged fraud estimated at about ₦36.5 billion and $30 million. Authorities suspect that the funds were misappropriated and laundered through a network of companies linked to the former bank chairman.

Investigators are reportedly examining no fewer than 12 companies believed to be associated with Ayeni as part of efforts to trace the movement of the funds and establish the full scope of the alleged scheme.

The EFCC is said to be focusing on how the loans were obtained, the purposes for which they were approved, and whether due process was followed in their utilisation.

Ayeni, a prominent Nigerian lawyer and investor, previously served as chairman of the now-defunct Skye Bank Plc. The bank was taken over by regulators and later transitioned into Polaris Bank following a financial crisis that led to the revocation of its operating licence.

The case has drawn attention due to Ayeni’s past role in the banking sector and the scale of the alleged fraud, which ranks among the more significant financial crime investigations in recent months.

The EFCC, established in 2003, is Nigeria’s primary agency tasked with investigating and prosecuting financial crimes, including fraud, money laundering, and corruption. Its operations fall under the authority of the federal government, and it has been involved in several high-profile cases involving politicians, business leaders, and public officials.

The arrest of Ayeni is consistent with the commission’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on financial crimes and recover diverted public and private funds. Analysts note that such cases often involve complex financial trails and require extensive forensic investigation.

Possible legal proceedings against Tunde Ayeni

Reports indicate that Ayeni may be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded. Legal experts suggest that the prosecution will likely focus on charges related to money laundering, diversion of funds, and breach of trust, depending on the evidence gathered.

At this stage, no formal charges have been publicly filed, and Ayeni has not made any official statement regarding the allegations. Under Nigerian law, suspects remain innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The case underscores ongoing concerns about corporate governance and financial accountability within Nigeria’s banking and business sectors. It also highlights the role of regulatory oversight in ensuring that large financial transactions, particularly loans tied to major projects, are properly monitored and utilised.

Observers say the outcome of the investigation could have implications for financial institutions, regulatory frameworks, and investor confidence, especially if the allegations are substantiated in court.

The investigation remains active, with Ayeni still in EFCC custody. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as the probe progresses and as decisions are made regarding potential prosecution.

The case is likely to remain in the public spotlight, given its scale and the prominence of the individuals involved, as Nigeria continues efforts to strengthen its fight against financial crimes and corruption.
